Historical Context
  • Meritocracy and need for selection explain persistence of older format of state-managed examinations
  • heavy content emphasis
  • pupil and school quality was expressed in examination performance
  • much of the teaching remains conventional, text driven due to the emphasis on the examination
  • Economic and cultural globalisation has fundamentally changed. Thus the nature of work has changed
  • quality learning occurs when students are challenged by authentic and intellectually demanding tasks. Thus teachers need to set these tasks as part of instruction be able to assess quality of student response and tailor future instruction accordingly.
  • improving assessment will help teachers identify ineffective areas of instruction
  • there's a need a disconnect between what's in the real world and in school
  • seeing the examination as the floor and not the ceiling
  • "schools are graveyards where ideas go to die"
