My Stay in San Francisco

Started the stay in San Francisco with the drive to return the car. From there it was a quick jog to pier 33 in hope of not missing the ferry for the Alcatraz tour. Phew! Made it in time. The tour began with a briefing by a park intern and I stayed on for a walk-about tour done by an experienced Park Ranger. It started as a harbour defence fort which later was converted to one of the world's most legendary prisons which operated from 1934 - 1963. Inmates included Al "Scarface" Capone, and the "Birdman" Robert Stroud.

Capone's life of crime was truly over when he was thrown into Alcatraz. The wardens were firm and the rules were strict. Rule #30 Loud talking, shouting, whistling, singing or other unnecessary noises are not permitted. You are permitted to hole QUITE conversations and to play games Quietly with your adjoining neighbours ONLY. Pretty routine and no nonsense would ever be tolerated.

After the walk around Alcatraz, it was time to head out to the famous Pier 39, Fishman's Wharf. Stopped over at Fog Harbour Fish House to try out the famous garlic roasted Dungeness Crab. One crab could easily feed party of 2. Delicious and satisfying. Then it was off to the hotel for a well-earned rest. Took the tram up the slope and walked the rest of the way back to the hotel. It was beginning to become foggy and cold.

Started to explore the streets of San Francisco in the evening on my own. The streets are well-lit and safe. A couple of homeless people and a few "shady" figures. It was interesting to see the streets of San Francisco in the evening. Found a supermarket and bought the beef jerky for sis as well as gummy bears for KY. Returned to the hotel at around 11.30pm. Really pooped out. Have to get some rest before the bike ride through the Golden Gate Bridge tomorrow.
